Groundwater Zones:

The zone of aeration is where water has infiltrated the ground but is not saturated. When the ground in unsaturated this means it still has pores that can hold more water.

From the picture to the left you can see the soil in the zone of aeration has been magnified. You can observe water droplets as well as white air pockets. These areas are called pores.
